From today, Finnair is flying direct from Helsinki to Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s three main islands. You take a 2hr 55min flight from Heathrow, connect with the new service at Helsinki’s Vantaa airport, then shoot over the top of Siberia to Sapporo. Total journey time from London is just under 13 hours — that’s three hours quicker than flying via Tokyo. (Finnair operates connecting flights from Edinburgh and Manchester, too.)
