Inside Edge: Racers battle the powder while we play - Bonner County Daily Bee

Fixed! — Face shots! That’s how to explain the skiing this week. Schweitzer is “fixed” with 100 percent of the terrain open and skiing great.

The two new lifts change the way the mountain plays and call for modifications to first chair powder strategies. It’ll take a little getting used to, but we love the way it scatters the crowd.

Of course, all this snow presented challenges to both the organizers and competitors throughout the Northwest, as you’ll read below.

World Cup — The U.S. ladies speed team is healed and regaining the depth of two years ago. Lauren Ross should be up and running later in the season, but the returners made their presence known this past week at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee last week.

Breezy Johnson, Alice McKennis and Jackie Wiles finished 25th, 26th and 27th in downhill. Alice Merryweather was 17th in flat light Super G that had 16 racers fail to finish.

Mikaela Shiffrin took the bronze medal in the Flachau night slalom, followed by Paula Moltzan in 23rd and Nina O’Brien in 29th.

The men’s tech team was at Adelboden where Ted Ligety was seventh in the giant slalom, followed by Ryan Cochran-Siegle in 18th. Meanwhile young Luke Winters continued his consistent high performance by placing in the slalom points again with a 26th place finish.

Northwest Cup No. 1 — Crystal Mountain had to move the opening race from the traditional Bull Run due to lack of snow. Add recent precipitation and a large field of older athletes, and the ruts got deep.

Two local girls competed in the three slalom races. Quincy Evans finished 31st and 13th and was disqualified in the final event. Chloie Mahkak was 36th, 24th and 36th respectively.

Hampton Cup — Mission Ridge hosted an Evergreen Cup race for 175 U-14s and above over the weekend. Normally one encounters a hard surface and little or no new snow there, however, this weekend featured soft snow, 7 inches of new powder and blustering winds.

The race crew did a great job and the races were successful. A number of local athletes competed. Avery Edmundson posted consistent results of 14th and 17th. Her sister, Erika, had to hike her first race, but bounced back with a fourth place finish on Sunday.

Wesley Simko was sixth on Saturday, but disqualified Sunday. Cadin Billstin placed 24th and 28th respectively. Crosby Schmidt “attacked from the back” starting 79th and posted solid finishes of 34th and 20th.

Chad Engram Memorial — Those of you who carved up the powder might be surprised to learn that this the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School hosted races Saturday and Sunday for the Youth Ski League.

Due to the number of youth athletes, we only report top 15 finishes. On the boys side, Solen Landwehr won the U8 slalom Saturday, but didn’t finish on Sunday. Rhys Taylor won the U10 division Saturday, then took silver on Sunday. Teammate Wyatt Lemon was close behind, placing third and fourth respectively. Logan Johnston was 12th on Sunday.

Geru Gidley had a great weekend, finishing second and first for the tough U12 age group. His teammate Dakota Landwehr was close behind, finishing third both days. Sharp Royce was 14th on Saturday.

Teammates Annabelle Leonard and Stella Albright dominated the girls U8 division. Leonard won both days with Albright claiming silver. Tekla Lien was third in Sunday’s race.

Elaina Stiller owned the U10 girls, winning both days. Zayda Ambauen was 15th Saturday. Halle Wyman was eighth and sixth respectively for U12 girls. Sophia Taylor was 14th on Sunday.

Other competitors were: James Schriber, Libby Welker, Hannah Stiller, Faith Stephany and Clara Sherman.

Nordic — The first two of six PNSA division qualifier races were held this weekend at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Ski Area. Despite blizzard conditions each day and deep snow, which is not conducive to fast XC ski racing, three Sandpoint Nordic juniors pushed their physical limits racing both skate and classic races on Saturday and Sunday on the hilly ski course.

Severe weather dictated last minute course changes for Saturday’s skate race and had racers skiing a 1.3K hilly loop two or three times.

Kasten Grimm, a second year U14, skated the 2x1.3K loop and placed sixth with a time of 9:56.31. Grimm finished seventh in the 3K classic race in a time of 13:57.1, just 1:14 behind first place.

Jett Longanecker, a first year U16, skated 3x1.3K loop in 13:57.21, coming in 10th out of a field of 20. Longanecker finished the 5K classic race in fifth place with a time of 20:34.9.

Clara Cave, a first year U18, placed 11th out of 17 in the 3x1.3K skate race, finishing in 16:47.95 and she took 13th in the 5K classic race, finishing in 26:26.6.

Junior Race Series — The Junior Race Series was canceled due to unsafe conditions last Friday. The weather looks good to resume competition this week.
