私の全身を言いしれぬ感慨が走った。そのおばさんの美しい心に打たれ、たとえようのない幸福感に私は満たされていた。

修行で出会った「利他の心」

　網代笠を深くかぶっているから、私が誰であるかはわかるはずはない。ただ、見慣れない雲水だということはわかったようだ。ある家では、おかみさんが、「新しいお坊さんですね。お顔を見るのは初めてです。修行は大変で、お腹も空くでしょうから帰りに何か食べてください」と五百円玉を差し出された。

　決して豊かな暮らしをされているようには見えなかったが、ねぎらいの言葉とともに、心温まるお布施をいただいた。その美しく優しい心は、今まで私が感じたことがないくらい純粋だったように思う。

　さらに托鉢をつづけていると、わらじの先から少し指が出ているものだから、アスファルトに爪があたり、普通の姿勢では痛くて歩けなくなる。そのため、かかとに体重を乗せて歩いていると、今度はふくらはぎが痛くなってくる。何ともみっともない格好で、頭陀袋にお米をいっぱい入れて公園の中を歩いていると、落ち葉を掃き集めていたおばさんが小走りに寄ってこられ、何もおっしゃらずに、私に百円を恵んでくださった。

　そのとき、私の全身を言いしれぬ感慨が走った。そのおばさんの美しい心に打たれ、たとえようのない幸福感に私は満たされていた。全身を「愛」が包んでくれると表現してもいいだろう。

　布施を施す側に、衒（てら）いも、奢（おご）りも、気負いもなかった。もちろん、何か返礼を期待しているはずもない。美しい心根のままに、お布施を差し出されて…
