Fire at Viterra Grain Elevator Burns for 40 Hours
Firefighters worked for about 40 hours to douse a blaze that ignited in a Viterra grain elevator at the Port of Vancouver in late January. Anheuser-Busch Plans $85M Expansion at Georgia Facility
Beer company Anheuser-Busch is committing $85 million to expand its Cartersville, GA brewery. Opened in 1993, the site currently manufactures 20 Anheuser-Busch brands and canned emergency drinking water. The facility was the company’s first to obtain USDA organic certification for the production and packaging of Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold beer.
Fire Breaks Out at Barry Callebaut Chocolate Plant
A two-alarm fire broke out last month in the Barry Callebaut cocoa powders and cocoa liquor manufacturing plant in Eddystone, PA. During the incident, fire was mostly contained to a roasting room in the facility. The company announced plans in September 2019 to nearly double the size of its Eddystone plant. The company said the added space will help it to add lines for its domestically produced cocoa powder and butter products.
Conagra Commits $32M to Expand Production at Iowa Plant
Packaged foods manufacturer Conagra Brands is moving forward on plans for a $31.9 million expansion of its production facility in Fort Madison, IA. During the expansion, Conagra said it is making a “significant investment” in new equipment and machinery for canned beans production. Installation of the new production assets is slated to start this July.
The Andersons Fined $291K After Grain Engulfment Death
American agribusiness The Andersons was issued several citations and a fine of $291,716 by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after two workers became engulfed by material in a grain storage bin at the firm’s facility in Toledo, OH. In addition to the citations and fine, The Andersons was entered into OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program.
Walmart Announces Opening of New Beef Packing Facility
American retail chain operator Walmart opened its new 201,000-sq-ft case-ready beef packing facility in Thomasville, GA in mid-January. The company started construction on the site in August 2018 as part of an effort to increase the quality of the food products it carries. Walmart’s Thomasville plant will process and distribute cuts of Angus beef, including steaks and roasts, to 500 Walmart stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and other parts of the southeast U.S.
